Free online speed reading training for expanding your field of view with "Shultz tables"These free online exercises can help expand your peripheral awareness
and promote increased reading speed. The Idea behind this free online Speed Reading ProgramOur eyes have their clearest vision in the central zone of view. Everything that lies outside this central zone is seen as a frog would see it. This broad field of vision makes the searching process shorter. It is possible to widen our field and quicken our vision by using "Shultz tables". Work with Shultz tables develops three-dimensional (parallel) attention. The symbols can be perceived as one picture, (non- consecutively).
How to use this flash?First left click on the red Go arrow in the lower right corner of this window and the Shultz Table will appear. Your main strategy is to softly look at the red dot in the center of the table and continue to see this central point while at the same time noticing all numbers on the corners of the table. With each left mouse click on the red dot in the center of the page, the numbers will be altered. With your peripheral awareness engaged as you gently rest your focus on the red dot, you will notice each alteration of the numbers as you continue to left click on the mouse. However, if your attention lapses, some of the alterations of the number pairs may not be noticed, and they may not appear to have been altered by their respective mouse click. This training increases peripheral vision and assists you in raising the velocity of your reading to a speed reading level.

Limited Perceptual SpanWhen we first learned to read, we took note of every single letter. Instead of
reading cat, we read c-a-t; limited perceptual span becomes l-i-m-i-t-e-d -- p-e-r-c-e-p-t-u-a-l
--s-p-a-n. As we developed our reading skill, we learned to spot words or parts
of words and our reading speed increased dramatically. The same process happens
as we learn to speed read. If you only read one word at a time, this is considerably
slower than taking in four or five words at once. Eye Focus - Prime Reason for Slow Reading. This means that you have trained your eyes to look at a tiny section of a page, often only one word. You hardly use your peripheral vision at all. Your eyes are capable of seeing everything on the page at a glance, yet you have been trained to try to focus on each tiny section of the page that contains a letter. Compare this to your ability to walk into a room and take in all or most of what's there with a quick glance. This is how fast your brain and vision are capable of working. Yet we have been trained from infancy to focus first on individual letters, and then individual words. Then the training stopped. The next logical part of reading training is instantly grasping groups of words. With more and more training the groups can be bigger and bigger. You do not need to focus on every individual inch of a movie screen to know that the evil villain has snatched the screaming heroine. If you did try to focus like that, your understanding and recall of the action, plot and even the scenery would be significantly reduced. You will see that you can learn to "look" at a page and be reading, with almost the same process that you look at a movie screen. If you practice with the drills that increase the amount of text that you can read simply by looking, you will be amazed at how much you can take in. Simple drills in the next section can quickly "soften" your focus to include groups of words. This allows you to read more quickly with better comprehension and less effort.
